It is recommended that all divers have a medical review of their suitability for diving on entry to the sport. It is common industry practice that some dive schools require students to undergo a diving medical prior to starting their dive courses.Diving medicals are a regular part of life for occupational divers and are required once a year generally, and sometimes more regularly if this is the case as determined by a Diving Medical consultant.Dr. Karin Vela obtained a diploma in diving medicine in 2009, with competence to perform the initial and all others assessments of working and recreational divers or compressed air workers. She can manage diving accidents and advise diving contractors and others on diving medicine and physiology.Apart from diving for pleasure, she wants to raise the standards of safety during diving and her mission is to educate the divers in how to face all the health and physiological challenges of this wonderful sport. She is listed as the Diving Physician at EDA (Emirates Diving Association) as well as the London Diving Chamber.
